Renoir’s “Dance” paintings at the Frick

A quick note to let people in the New York City area know about a new exhibition at the Frick Collection:

Renoir, Impressionism, and Full-Length Painting
February 7 through May 13, 2012

Among the Renoir paintings on view are all three of his full-length “Dance” paintings: Dance in the City and Dance in the Country (1882–83) from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris and Dance at Bougival (1882–83) from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Along with recommending the exhibit just because it’s a chance to see a group of Renoirs that are not generally on view in New York, or in such a concentrated group, I have a personal interest: I did a consultation with one of the curators there on late nineteenth-century dance and how knowledge of it affects how one sees the paintings.  This won’t turn up in the exhibit, alas, but I’m assured it’ll all be kept on file at the Frick for curatorial reference there.

Full details are at the exhibit page on the Frick website.

The three were then exhibited in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts, and there’s a nice presentation on them in particular, here: http://www.wgbh.org/wgbharts/Article.cfm?articleID=6376.
