I will be teaching a trio of workshops sponsored by Big Apple Waltz in New York City on Sunday, November 13th, covering a trio of waltz forms ranging from the nonstop spinning of the classic Victorian waltz and the lively hops and heel-clicks of the mazurka waltz to new variations for modern rotary waltz and the beautiful, flowing cross-step waltz!
The workshops will be held at the DANY Studios, Studio 10, on West 38th Street between 8th and 9th, from 1:00 to 6:00 pm. No partner is required, but lead/follow balance is not guaranteed. Experience level needed varies somewhat by workshop -- see the details below.
The cost is $10 per workshop, or take all three for only $25. No pre-registration needed -- just show up!
Here's the official announcement:
Big Apple Waltz presents: a day of waltz workshops from the Victorian era to the present day!
Join dance historian/teacher Susan de Guardiola for a smorgasbord of waltz classes including the classic waltz of the Victorian era, the bouncy mazurka waltz of the mid-nineteenth century, and beautiful variations for the modern rotary waltz and the flowing cross-step waltz. Improve your basics, add variations, or expand your repertoire to a different waltz style!
1:00-2:30: Victorian Waltz & Mazurka Waltz. Basics of the original continuously turning waltz style of the mid-19th century, plus the lively, bouncy mazurka waltz and basic mazurka steps for promenading.
2:45-4:15: Modern Rotary Waltz Variations. Wrap-ups, swingouts, underarm turns, and pivots for modern-styled rotary waltz. Should already know a basic rotary waltz or take the previous class to learn it!
4:30-6:00: Cross-Step Waltz Variations. Basic turning plus beautiful new variations for this lovely, flowing modern waltz form suited to slow waltz tunes.
Flat or (for ladies) low-heeled shoes with smooth soles (leather, not rubber) are recommended -- no spike heels, please! Flat shoes are strongly preferred for the Victorian class; low heels work fine for rotary waltz.

And for those interested in pure social waltz of any kind: join us Friday, December 16th, for the Big Apple Waltz holiday dance -- friendly social waltzing and other couple dances in downtown Manhattan! Details on the Big Apple Waltz website!
