I will be teaching a trio of workshops sponsored by Vintage Dance Northeast in New York City this Sunday, March 27th, two of which focus on historical dance of the mid-ninteenth century.
The workshops will be held at the DANY Studios, Studio 10, on West 38th Street between 8th and 9th, from 1:00 to 6:00 pm. No experience is necessary and no partner is needed. The cost is $10 per workshop, or take all three for only $20. No pre-registration needed -- just show up! The Victorian dance workshops are great preparation for the Victorian Fancy Dress Ball coming up in New Haven on Saturday, April 2nd!
Flat or low-heeled shoes (no spikes!) with slidey soles (leather, not rubber) are recommended for all the workshops. Casul dress is fine!
1:00-2:30pm Victorian Couple Dances
Take a spin on the Victorian dance floor with the basics of the most popular nineteenth-century couple dances: the whirling waltz, the lively polka, the elaborate schottische, and the high-speed galop! Everything you need to keep you on the floor at a Victorian ball all night long.
2:45-4:15pm Victorian Set Dances
Gentle ninteenth-century contras, delightful quadrille figures, and the unusual Le Triangle. Dances are done with walking steps; any skill level will thoroughly enjoy these beautiful choreographed patterns for groups of dancers.
The third workshop features ahistorical Steampunk dancing, which mixes Victorian style and figures with modern music and a dose of my own choreography:
4:30-6:00pm Steampunk Dance!
Victorian Aesthetic meets Modern Music when we dance to your favorite tunes by Abney Park and other artists at this special dance workshop. Crazy neo-Victorian choreography inspired by a mix of modern music, dance history, and clockwork. Beginner-friendly, but some experience with Victorian dance helpful.
A workshop flyer with more details may be downloaded on my workshop flyer page.
For more information about either workshop see the flyer first, then post questions here or email Vintage Dance Northeast.
