This weekend I will be leading workshops and precepting a formal ball at the Elegant Arts Society's Seventh Annual Regency Assembly in New Haven, Connecticut. This event features the dances of the first quarter of the nineteenth century (1800-1825), the era of Jane Austen, Lord Byron, and the Napoleonic Wars. There will be country dances done in period style, quadrilles, waltzes (including the bouncy sauteuse waltz), and reels, including the lively nine-person Country Bumpkin. Once again, Spare Parts will play for the evening event. Refreshments custom-baked from period recipes will be served at the ball intermissions. The workshop runs from 2:00-4:30, the ball from 7:30-11:00. Attendance at the workshop is encouraged because the more people who arrive at the ball already familiar with the particular country dance and quadrille figures, the more smoothly the evening will run. This is part of a larger event with Sunday activities scheduled as well.
All of Saturday's events are being held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 292 Wall Street (corner of Orange), New Haven, Connecticut. Park in the pay lot across the street from the church or at a meter (free after 7pm); the lot right behind the church is for neighboring residents and businesses, and they will tow cars without permits.
Sunday's event is a costumed stroll and picture-taking opportunity in the park, weather permitting (which is not looking good), followed by an afternoon of period gaming -- whist, picquet, spillikins, backgammon, etc., accompanied by tea and yet another set of period refreshments. Sunday's events take place in Edgerton Park and at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 830 Whitney Avenue. The stroll (if it occurs; this will be determined Saturday and announced at the ball) is at 1:00; tea and games from 2:30 to 5:00.
At-the-door rates are $30 for Satuday, $12 for Sunday. The flier for the event can be downloaded: front, back, registration form. You can also email for further information.
Not part of the weekend (but also fun) is an evening of couple dancing on the preceding Friday night, Elm City Waltz, where I will be DJ'ing a mix of historical and modern music.
It would be lovely to see Kickery readers there; please say hello after the workshop or at one of the breaks in the ball, or chat with me Sunday!
